Swedish Massage

Swedish massage was pioneered by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling, at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It was introduced to the U.S. in 1858 as “The Swedish Movement Cure.”  During Swedish massage, massage therapists use massage oils to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes called effleurage. Other classic Swedish massage moves include kneading, friction, stretching and (sometimes) tapping. Swedish massage uses firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension and create other health benefits.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Many of the same movements and techniques used in Swedish massage are employed, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as “adhesions.”)

Sports Massage

Sports massage was designed for athletes, but is useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury or range-of-motion issues. Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands, feet and ears that correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and promotes the natural function of the related areas of the body.

Polarity Therapy
Energy fields and currents exist everywhere in nature. Polarity Therapy asserts that the flow and balance of energy in the human body is the foundation of good health. Polarity Therapy is achieved through energy-based bodywork, diet, exercise and self-awareness. For more information please review this article at the American Polarity Therapy Association.

Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch is a modern application of ancient forms of healing. One of the underlying working assumptions of Therapeutic Touch is that human beings are open energy fields; any physical illness can be viewed as an imbalance in this energy field – as some form disorder. In Therapeutic Touch, the practitioner uses his/her hands in the client’s energy field to facilitate healing.
